- Canada’s September jobless rate dropped 0.1 percent from the previous month to 5.9 percent, the first time since November 1974 that Canadian unemployment was less than 6 percent. Employment gains in educational services increased by an estimated 25,000 and helped to offset declines observed earlier in the summer. This jump spurred public-sector employment growth to 4.4 percent on the year through October, while the private-sector growth was only 0.4 percent.
- Brazil’s August unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.5 percent from the previous month and fell 1.1 percent from the same month in 2006.
