Canada’s July jobless rate increased 0.3 percent to 6.4 percent from the previous month. A growth in construction jobs was offset by a steady decline in manufacturing jobs. Nonetheless, the rate is 0.4 percent lower than July 2005, and remains near 30-year lows.
Argentina’s second-quarter unemployment rate fell 1 percent to 10.4 percent compared to the previous quarter. The rate was 1.7-percent lower than the same quarter in 2005.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the unofficial loser in the hotly contested Mexican presidential elections, refuses to concede, continuing his call for a recount and alleging fraud on the part of declared winner Felipe Calderon. The Federal Electoral Tribunal has until Sept. 6 to name a president elect to replace Vicente Fox.
