G8 meeting

The G8 met in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 15-17, where issues of global free trade, global imbalances, and energy prices were top priorities. Leaders set a one-month deadline to revive recent global free trade talks, as disagreements over farm subsidies and industrial tariffs had previously stalled the discussion. A three-month deadline was set to end talks over a bilateral deal that could help Russia join the World Trade Organization (WTO). Six of the eight leaders said they supported using nuclear energy as a way to provide energy security and as a cleaner source of power that could help stem global warming. Russia softened its position on the Energy Charter by agreeing to open its energy sector to foreign investment, but Russia refused to ratify the international rule book.
