Although many currencies are saddled with dubious (“kiwi” for the New Zealand dollar) or obscure (“cable” for the British pound) nicknames, none match the Canadian
dollar for sheer, um, lunacy. The “loonie” moniker, while seemingly unflattering, has a logical explanation: The Canadian one-dollar coin has an image of a loon (a bird) on it.
