The Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s currency complex reached a milestone on Dec. 11 when daily volume on currency futures and options topped 1 million for the first time.
Daily volume of 1,268,883 contracts (almost 99 percent of the volume is futures volume) broke the old record of 892,000 contracts set in June and represents a notional value of more than $155 billion.
More than 82 percent of the currency volume traded electronically, and the almost-1.05 million electronic contracts shattered the old record of 726,660 contracts set on Dec. 1.
Individually, daily volume records were set on the Euro FX, Japanese yen, British pound, and Swiss franc contracts.
