  • Umaru Yar’Adua of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was elected president of Nigeria on April 21, but began his term among allegations of election rigging. After years of autocratic rule, this is the first time Nigeria has transferred the presidency from one elected official to another. Even so, special election tribunals will hear any challenges to the elections results.

  • South Africa’s Q1 unemployment rate dropped 0.1 percent from the previous quarter to 25.5 percent, a drop of 1.2 percent from the previous year. According to Statistics South Africa, it took five years until September 2006 to add 1.6 million jobs to the labor market, but from September 2005 to September 2006, a half-million jobs were added.
