Canada’s fourth-quarter economy gained 0.7 percent from the previous quarter and 2.8 percent compared to Q4 2005. The February unemployment rate decreased 0.1 percent from the previous month to 6.1 percent, a drop of 0.2 percent from the same month a year earlier. “Employment has been on an upward trend since August 2006 with average monthly gains of 42,000,” a Statistics Canada press release states. The latest data reflected the results of more people working in services, more youths working in February, and losses in the goods-producing sector because of declines in manufacturing and agriculture.

Brazil’s January jobless rate jumped 0.9 percent from the previous month to 9.3 percent, a 0.1-percent increase over the same rate in January 2006.

Argentina’s fourth quarter GDP grew a whopping 22 percent compared to the previous quarter. The country’s unemployment rate for the same period plunged 1.5 percent to 8.7 percent compared to Q3 and dropped 1.4 percent from the same quarter in 2005.
