  • July consumer prices in the 12 countries that use the Euro increased 2.1 percent from June and 2.2 percent from a year ago, putting inflation at its highest level in seven months. This inflation level makes it unlikely the European Central Bank will cut interest rates, which have remained unchanged at 2 percent since June 2003.

  • France’s May unemployment rate remained at 10.2 percent, a 0.2-percent increase over May 2004.

  • Germany’s June jobless rate dropped 0.3 percent to 11.3 percent compared to the previous month, an increase of 1.1 percent on the same month in 2004.

  • The March-May jobless rate in the UK remained stable at 4.8 percent, but fell 0.1 percent from the same period a year earlier.
