Currency fund managers were net losers in 2005 according to the Barclay Group (www.barclaygrp.com), which provides performance data on professional commodity trading advisors (CTAs).

A negative December (-1.07 percent) helped seal the fate of the Barclay Currency Traders Index, which posted a -.95 percent return for the year. It was the first time the currency index posted an annual loss since back-to-back losing years in 1993 and 1994. The only other sub-group of fund managers to finish the year in the red was the agricultural group. The overall Barclay CTA Index finished up 1.70 percent on the year.

The new year started off on a down note, too. Barclay’s BTOP FX Index, which tracks the performance of the 50 largest currency fund managers, was down -1.18 percent for the month as of Jan. 26.
