After hitting a yearly high in July, the Barclay’s Currency Trader Index (CTI) took another step backward in August, falling 0.23 percent. The drop leaves the index, comprised of 114 managed money programs (currency futures and spot forex) up just 0.85 percent on the year.

It hasn’t been a particularly good year for any of the seven Barclay indices. The benchmark CTA index fell almost 1 percent in August to a year-to-date gain of1.23 percent, and the Diversified Traders Index’s gain of 2.79 percent is the best of the seven.

The CTI is trying to avoid its third straight losing year, which would be a first in the 20-year history of the index.

The Barclay BTOP FX Index, which tracks the largest investable currency trading programs and accounts for at least half of the investable assets of all programs tracked by Barclay, struggled through a tough month, losing 1.2 percent and closing August up just 1.36 percent on the year.

The index, which has been calculated since the beginning of 2005, reached an all-time high of 1,053.60 on July 23 but has since fallen 3 percent and closed the month at 1,021.64.
